SUMMARY:Composting Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:So\, you’re already composting at home… fantastic! \nAre you constantly on the prowl for greens to balance your browns\, or vice versa? Is 99% of your chat about worms\, manure\, and how hot your compost pile got? Maybe you’ve already fallen out with someone for putting something ‘wrong’ in the compost? \nIt’s okay. We understand. \nA natural follow-on from our Home Composting for Beginners workshop\, this masterclass will take your composting comprehension to the next level!  Answering the big questions about bacterial decomposition vs. fungal\, exploring optimal composting temperatures (and how to sustain them)\, and investigating the rise of dubiously compostable packaging\, this class will take a deeper dive into some of the most effective ways to elevate your composting operation. Geek out with us as we break down the science of healthy soil\, learn how to use a soil testing kit (and take one home with you)\, and get clued up on how essential soil building is (and will be) in our rapidly changing climate. \nAt our plot in Ravenscraig\, Kirkcaldy\, we’ve been experimenting with eight different kinds of techniques this year: vermiculture\, bokashi\, hot bins\, mixed heaps\, seaweed mulch\, leaf mold\, home brew fertiliser\, and no-dig gardening. We will tour the composting systems and will be sharing our story of turning an overgrown\, compacted plot full of weeds and plastic into a healthy\, productive growing space for food and seed\, and the lessons that we’ve learned along the way. \nWe’ll provide a light plant-based lunch for the break\, but please feel free to bring your own. \nRegister to guarantee yourself a take home soil-testing kit\, and enough lunch! You are welcome to just turn up on the day as well. \nHow to find us \nEnter Ravenscraig Walled Garden through the big blue/green/grey gates on the road by the Dysart entrance to Ravenscraig Park. Proceed down the slope and straight along the track\, until you see a blue cabin on the right. We’ll meet there! \nIf you arrive by car\, you can park up inside the gates or further down behind the Greener Kirkcaldy cabin. \nAccess info \nRavenscraig Walled Gardens have uneven\, but wide\, gravel paths\, and some slopes. Weather dependant\, the ground may be muddy or wet. There is an accessible toilet on site\, a short distance from where we’ll meet. We aim to accommodate any mobility needs as best we can\, but plan to be moving between the cabin and our plot and composting site\, which is a couple of minutes walk down the track. There is limited accessible parking close to the blue cabin (by the woodchip bays) and our next to our plot. There will be plenty of opportunity to sit down\, and we have plastic and folding chairs.
