SUMMARY:St Andrews Seed Saving Sesh
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Seed Cabinet’s new host home to learn about seed saving! Find out: \n\nwhy seed saving is important for food security\,\nwhy seed saving is good for your garden\,\nhow to save different kinds of seeds from flowers\, fruit and veg\,\nhow to recognise wildflowers in your area and harvest their seed to spread\,\nwhat even is a seed and how does it work?!\n\nWe’ll be going for short walks around the EcoHub garden to look at their native wildflower collection\, and collect some seeds from any plants that are ready. \nIf you’d like a relaxing\, seated and social activity\, you can help us sort and process seeds into packets to go directly into the Seed Library Cabinet. \nYou can also bring along seeds you’ve already saved for the Library\, and take away winter crops or wildflowers that you’d like to sow. \nThis is a drop in event – come along at any time\, and stay for as long as you like. If you’d like a reminder email\, please RSVP below. \nAfterwards: we’re heading to the St Andrews Botanic Garden to hear Holly Silvester from the Gaia Foundation and East Neuk Market Garden give a talk about an exploration into the radical possibilities of seed! You should come along to that as well 🙂

We can also chat about your own gardens and offer advice about growing native plants and creating wildflower patches that are great for pollinators. \nTake home some native wildflower seeds to sow in your area. \nThe walk will be paced according to the needs of the participants\, and we’ll be able to choose a type of path and gradient that suits you. There are wheelchair-accessible paved paths as well as more rugged\, unpaved paths\, and we’ll have the option to branch into two parties if need be. SUMMARY:Get stuck in with seed saving
DESCRIPTION:Always wanted to save seed but don’t know where to start? Interested in gardening and growing\, but struggling to get out and about? Want to try something mindful that will connect you with nature? This event is for you! \nHelp the Fife Seed Library to build our collection by processing the seeds which have been donated to us by local growers. \nJoin us for a relaxed\, indoor\, seated session where you can learn all about seed saving for different crops\, and get hands on with some of our seeds that are waiting to be sorted. You’ll be able to get involved with whichever parts of the process are interesting to you: \n\nlearn how to sort the seeds from the chaff\nlearn about which seeds need to be dried or pre-processed before storing\nmeasure out seeds and put them into our compostable seed packets\nwrite labels for the packets of saved seeds\n\nNo experience needed! Even if you have never gardened or thought about seed saving before\, everyone is welcome. \nLight refreshments will be provided\, and you’re welcome to bring your own lunch or snacks. \nThis event is part of the Fife Climate Festival and has been generously funded by FCCAN! \nWhy do we save seed? \nSave seed – save money! \nSave seed – save the world. \nPlants adapt to their environment\, which means with each generation grown in the same place\, they get more resilient to the peculiarities of our local FIfe climate – adapting to soil conditions\, weather\, and local pests and diseases. Saving seeds from the strongest plants to sow again next year means you can improve your crops year-on-year. This is something we miss when we buy seeds from shops and garden centres that have been cultivated in other countries\, or inbred to produce particular yields (as with F1 hybrid seeds). \nSeed saving is also an act of resistance against the corporate capture of our global food systems. Break out from the cycle of chemical pesticides and fertilisers\, and cultative naturally resilient locally-adapted food and flowers. It’s a small action that anyone can take – even if you don’t have a garden – that opens the door to big change. \nWhat to bring \nJust yourself! Optionally\, any snacks or drinks you’d like. Any questions you have about saving seed from plants that you (or family\, friends and neighbours) are growing. \nIf you have saved or spare seed you’d like to add to the library\, please bring that along too! \nAccess \nThis event is indoors in the EATS Hub\, on the ground floor\, through an accessible entrance. We will be seated around tables\, with plenty of space to get up and move about or to sit away from others. \nThere are accessible toilets in the same space as the event. \nPlease let us know if there is anything we can do to enable your participation.
