Let’s make compost together!
We’re running a year-long community soil building pilot project. We’re working with local community organisations and small businesses – caterers, art studios, tree surgeons, gardeners, and heritage sites – to turn surplus materials into healthy compost.
We’re aiming to source our input materials from within 5 miles of the Fife coastline, and redistribute it to local growers next year.
Why?
Soil health is crucial to growing nutritious food and healthy flowers, and Fife has some concerning areas of post-industrial brownfield; leftovers from the mining operations that supported past generations, but unfortunately left many heavy metals and sub-soil matter on the surface. We will demonstrate the power of a remediative practice which Fife was also famous for: composting! By pulling together all the available elements of forest and coastal living like seaweed, woodchip, food waste and a whole galaxy of beneficial plants, we’re creating hyperlocal compost, harnessing the power of worms and beneficial bacteria to clean up our soils.
How?
We’re creating compost from local surplus materials at our plot in Dysart. We have bays, different size bins, hotbins and other experiments going on so that we can optimise based on the materials available and learn as much as we can!
We’re sharing this with the community by running workshops for individuals, allotment holders, and community gardens. We want as many people composting as possible!

Will you compost my stuff??
We are carefully balancing the materials we take for the healthiest compost, and gradually scaling up our operations. This means we can’t say yes to everything all the time! If you have surplus woodchip, grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, unbleached paper, tape-free cardboard, or leaf litter in medium quantities we’d love to have a chat with you about what’s possible now, or in the future. We can also help you get set up with your own composting processes!
